More effective strategies for managing pain are necessary in light of recent increases in prescription drug misuse across the country. This course will cover strategies for office-based assessment of pain
and addiction liability, important considerations for treating pain and methods to monitor for the emergence of addictive behaviors during treatment. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain
management for patients known to have substance abuse concerns will be addressed including up-to-date information on buprenorphine and methadone. The focus of this presentation will be therapeutic
strategies to improve care of these most challenging patients.
Designed for physicians and medical personnel who work in methadone maintenance treatment programs, this workshop reviews core information brought to light by recent studies including the data on the cardiac effects, drug interactions, and safe induction practices. Emerging epidemiologic data such as the rise in prescription opioid use/abuse and approaches to the care of these patients will also be
covered. The syllabus for the workshop will include the 2008 edition of CSAM's Guidelines for Physicians Working in Opioid Treatment Programs.
In the current landscape of regulatory and political flux brought on by recent legislative action to terminate the California Medical Board's Physician Diversion Program, physicians and well-being committees must function in a climate of new treatment and monitoring challenges, legal risks, and reporting requirements. In this problem-based workshop a panel of clinical and legal experts will utilize case examples to present practices that address the new realities in California.
This course is designed to assist providers and their office personnel seeking to maximize reimbursement for substance abuse services and increase access to care for their patients. It will Included a review of the types of services provided and the coding and documentation requirements for these services. Medical necessity for the reimbursement of these services is provided by the use of ICD-9 diagnosis codes. The importance of ICD-9 specificity, linking of the ICD-9 to the service and sequencing of the ICD-9 will be discussed. Medicare proposed fee schedule changes for 2009 will be covered, as well as a preview of any new ICD-9 codes that become effective for use October 1, 2008. Finally we will discuss the importance of understanding Modifiers and their use in getting your services reimbursed.
