About CSAM
CSAM is a specialty society of physicians founded in 1973. Since 1989, CSAM has been a State Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). CSAM Mission Statement: The specific purpose of the Society is to advance the treatment of alcoholism and other addictions through education of physicians, physicians-in-training, and other health professionals. Additionally, the Society promotes research, prevention, and implementation of evidence-based treatment. Our top priorities at the present time are: • The annual Review Course or State of the Art Course • The newsletter and CSAM web page
The CSAM newsletter is published three times a year. It features articles of clinical interest as well as reports of activities and projects of like-minded colleagues throughout the state. CSAM's web page includes information about CSAM, a listing of CME activities, clinical updates and resources, back issues of CSAM News, and an on-line membership directory.
• Making the physician’s voice heard on public policy issues
In the last few years CSAM has become a respected voice speaking out on policy issues at the state level. CSAM through its Committee on Public Policy has helped sponsor and lead the fight for insurance parity for the treatment of chemical dependency. CSAM has also been active in legislation for and greater access to addiction treatment.
• Advocacy for selected issues in California
Examples are the Diversion Program for Physicians and education about addiction in California’s medical schools.
