DEA One-Time Training Requirement on Opioid and Substance Use Disorders
Beginning June 27, 2023, the federal Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act enacted a one-time 8-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered prescribers (except veterinarians) on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders. Registered practitioners must complete this training before their next scheduled DEA registration submission (initial or renewal) and attest to completion on the DEA registration form. Once completed, this requirement does not need to be repeated for future renewals.
As explained by California Medical Association, many California-licensed physicians may have already met the requirement as California already requires similar education. Also, physicians who are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry and exempt from the DEA requirements. To read more about the requirement, see the DEA guidance letter here.
