Lunch and Learn Webinar- Minority Stress: Understanding Mental Health and Addictions Challenges in the LGBTQ Community

The stress of anticipated and actual discrimination experienced by minoritized and marginalized groups poses a unique risk for the development of co-occurring mental health and addictive disorders, requiring complex and specialized treatment approaches to realize significant clinical outcomes. This session will explore minority stress and intergenerational trauma as models to explain the higher incidence of these conditions in minoritized populations and describe proactive and reactive approaches to mitigate the impact of those stressors. Although the session will focus on the LGBTQ population, the concepts can be generalized to other minoritized groups.

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss LGBTQ demographics and healthcare disparities as a means of understanding some of the unique challenges for mental health and wellness in the community

2. Describe minority stress as it relates to the experience of marginalized communities and how this evolving concept helps to explain some of these unique challenges, including mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and addictions.

3. Provide coping strategies for how to improve overall wellness for any groups who experience minority stress.
